There goes a saying: "Sports are the most important of unimportant things". Indeed, sports are getting ever more important, not only from the fans' perspective but also from an economic aspect. 900 million people watched the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics, and 1 billion watched the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final. So on one hand, interest for sports analytics is growing, especially in relation to football and basketball. Currently, there are many open questions still answered by human intuition although hard data is there to distill the truth from. The student will get familiar with the usual formats of the input data, with the already applied analytical methods, and will look for novel sports analytics results.
